Robert E. McNair has served South Carolina as a statesman and industry recruiter. McNair was born in Cades, South Carolina. After serving in World War II, he graduated from the University of South Carolina's School of Law in 1948. In 1951 he was elected to the S.C. House of Representatives from Allendale County. He was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina in 1962 and served until April 1965 when he succeeded Donald Russell as governor. In 1966 he was elected to a full term as governor. Since his retirement from public life, Governor McNair has been a tireless industry recruiter and served on many corporate, university, and development boards.
