South Carolina's poet laureate was born in McClellanville and was educated at Porter Military Academy in Charleston. He graduated from Union College in New York in 1904, and then joined Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania where for thirty-three years he remained as head of the English Department. He retired in 1932 and returned to live at his ancestral home, Hampton. He served as poet laureate for thirty-nine years. He was the author of ninety books of poetry and prose. He received twenty honorary degrees and thirty gold medals for his writings.
