Col. William Barret Travis was a hero of the Mexican War, distinguished for his bravery during the defense of the Alamo. He was born near Red Bank in Edgefield District (now Saluda County), South Carolina. In 1818 the Travis family moved to Alabama, and in 1831 William Barret Travis left Alabama for Texas. As a lieutenant colonel during the Mexican War, Travis was ordered to reinforce the Alamo at San Antonio and, with James Bowie, assumed complete command. Travis died in 1836, defending the Alamo from the Mexican Army.
